The Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service has failed to effectively carry out her duties, particularly in addressing the growing political violence in the country.
Law enforcement agencies are tasked with maintaining peace and order, yet under her leadership, political unrest has continued to escalate without meaningful intervention.
Reports of politically motivated attacks, intimidation, and suppression of opposition voices have become rampant, raising serious concerns about the impartiality and effectiveness of the police force.
Instead of taking decisive action to curb these disturbances, the police have often been accused of either turning a blind eye or acting in favor of those in power.
This failure to act decisively has emboldened political thugs who now operate with impunity, knowing there are little to no consequences for their actions.
The role of the Inspector General is not just to oversee the police force but to ensure that all Malawians, regardless of political affiliation, are protected from violence and injustice.
When the leadership of a key institution like the police service fails, the ripple effects are felt across the nation, undermining democracy and eroding public trust.
The Inspector General must be held accountable for this negligence, and the only reasonable course of action is for her to step down or be dismissed from her position.
Malawi deserves a police service that is committed to the rule of law, not one that is seen as an enabler of political violence and partisan interests.
If genuine peace and democracy are to prevail, then decisive leadership changes must be made, starting with the removal of the current Inspector General.
Only through accountability and reform can Malawians regain confidence in their police service and the justice system at large.
