200 Malawian teachers in pain for not being paid on new salaries

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-About two hundred self upgraded government teachers in the country have not yet started to withdraw their new salaries despite receiving letters of promotion to Grade TI in January this year.

The teachers, most of whom science specialists, have said, at the moment, life is so painful since the money they used to saved was all blown away in pursuit of higher levels of education.

One of the teachers who spoke to Maravi Post on the condition of anonymity said what is even more painful is that their counterparts who were promoted on political platter in April, before the 21 May tripartite elections, started to withdraw their new salaies the same month.

“There are some who have not yet got their promotional letters. These ones are best known by the Ministry; and apart from that, there is another group which was promoted in April on political influence and these people got their promotional letters and are withdrawing new salaries.”

“But our group, we are still striving to get the new salaries. Now we are pleading with the Government that we science teachers should also be considered. We wonder why up to now we are not receiving our new salariy adjustments,” said the anonymous

However, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) Spokesperson, Lindiwe Chide, asked for more time to consult with relevant stakeholders within the Ministry.

And General Secretary for Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM), Charles Kumchedwa, has expressed ignorance of the development.

Meanwhile, the concerned teachers have put it that should the Government delay to act on their plight, they will hold vigils at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Lilongwe.
