LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The former Malawi national women’s football team the Scorchers player Linda Kasenda has asked more companies to come in and sponsor women’s football if the sport is to develop in the country.
Kasenda who is the ambassador alongside Asimenye Simwaka for the FIFA women’s Football campaign made the call on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Civo Stadium when FAM launched the campaign.
“Let me hail Football Association of Malawi for the initiative saying this will play a great role in nurturing the hidden talents.
“The girls are showcasing good talent here hence let me urge the authorities to keep on on bringing such initiatives. I would wish if we had leagues ranging from ages 14-20 and that sponsors come in to support these leagues that the sport can fast grow in the country.
“Lastly, let me encourage the girls to continue working hard so that we produce other Tabitha’s and Temwa’s”, said Kasenda.

The campaign is aimed at increasing the number of women and girls playing football around the world by promoting the game, creating awareness and empowering girls through football in a friendly and safe environment.
The campaign has been officially launched at Civo Stadium where sixty girls from six teams namely; Ascent Academy FC, Hungry Lions FC, Mpira M’mudzi Mwathu, TC11, Kamuzu Institute FC and Chilinde Queens FC.
Ascent Academy FC defeated TC11 by 3-2 to win the championship at Civo Stadium.
Speaking after the launch, Chimango Munthali who is the Football Association of Malawi Executive Committee member said that FIFA women’s football campaign is the activator that will help to develop the sport from the grassroots.
“We have been running elite women’s league but now FAM has looked at it and say let’s start it from the basics, starting from the basics we mean going down and have saturated football development program hence this is an activator of the national under 14 league which is starting in few weeks time”.
“The campaign is happening in the cities as there are already existing structures for elite football but the campaign will reach out to all corners of the country “, Chimango said.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) will on Sunday 4th June 2023 be conducting the same event in Mzuzu and in Blantyre the campaign will be conducted on Saturday next weekend.
