AIP falls out: Only 1.5 million farmers to benefit for 2023/2024 season

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera’s Tonse Alliance has set MK15,000 price for a 50-kilogram Affordable Input Program (AIP) in the 2023/2024 growing season.

The government has disclosed that will distribute 149,000 metric tones of fertilizer targeting 1.5 million people.

The program is pegged at MK109 billion.

Addressing face the press on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in the capital Lilongwe, Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale said 67,000 metric tones of fertilizer are in the warehouse for companies that will be dealing with fertilizer delivery.

Kawale also disclosed that livestock program farmers will be required to pay MK15,000 per livestock.

He said IFAD is expected to donate MK5 billion towards the program.

He further said the minister of Finance is expected to hand over foreign currency today which will help to purchase the inputs.

Last year AIP targeted 2.5 million but the government failed to meet the number of beneficiaries as fertilizer had a lot of wrong deals during the purchase.

Chakwera is expected to launch the program in Kasungu on October 20.
