Malawi Army dismissed soldier arrested in Lilongwe for possessing illegal firearm

Lilongwe, April 4: An ex-Malawi Defence Force  (MDF) officer was Friday nabbed in Lilongwe for illegal possession of firearm which, according to sources, he was selling.

Lilongwe Police confirmed the incident on Saturday and identified the ex-soldier as 30-year-old Mackson Sato of Chitawira Village, T/A Ntaja, Blantyre.

 

Lilongwe Police Spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, said Sato was arrested Friday at around 11:00am at Lilongwe Bus Depot following a tip-off from the general public that a man was selling a firearm in town.

“Our Criminal Investigation Department officers went on the ground to investigate the matter and they found Sato at the Bus Depot where upon search, they found him with a pistol and one bullet,” explained Dandaula.

He said Sato could not produce any license for the firearm or give convincing reasons for his possessing it.

According to Dandaula, Sato once served in the Malawi Defence Force in a low rank and he was dismissed some time back.

The ex-soldier is currently in police custody and he is charged of possession of prohibitive weapon, contrary to Firearms Act, According to Dandaula.
