LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says is ready to host a memorable four nations football tournament in the capital Lilongwe.
The local organizing committee chairperson Madalitso Kuyera who is also the Malawi’s FA first vice President revealed during the press briefing held at the Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
“Facilities such as Bingu National and Silver stadiums earmarked to host the under 20 and senior teams are ready and they are player friendly for those who play in Europe. This tournament will showcase our capability of hosting major events as a country.
“Security will be tight during these games as we have engaged other stakeholders such as the Police, Immigration and Lilongwe City Council hence let me strongly warn those would be hooliganism culprits that the law will work upon them accordingly”, says Kuyera.
Kuyera also revealed that for the tournament to take place, the four football association’ presidents agreed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The Presidents agreed that the tournament should be hosted by Malawi, with Federation International of Football Associations (FIFA) funding the logistics of the participating nations.
Tickets for the games are already out for sale in various outlets across the country.
The under 20 tournament which has three nations, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe kicks off today at Silver Stadium and tickets will be on sale at the gates.
The four Senior team coaches have named strong squads as the tournament will also have bearing on FIFA world ranking.
One of the leading commercial banks in the country, First Capital Bank has sponsored the event with money amounting to MK50 million.
