LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In line with combating climate change, four nations’ dignitaries planted trees along the bypass road in the capital, Lilongwe, on Monday, March 25th, 2024.
The President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Flames Captain John Banda, Patson Daka of Zambia, Nyasha Munetsi of Zimbabwe, and Michael Olunga of Kenya led the dignitaries in the tree-planting exercise.
“Football has more supporters than any other sport in the world, and we thought it wise to be responsible to our communities. One of the things we can do is to plant trees. That’s why we wanted to take this opportunity of hosting the four nations tournament to spend some hours planting trees.
“This is also in line with FIFA’s directive that we have to look after our community. This is our commitment and dedication that FAM is showing to the country and to the world, that football can be part of the community that can transform,” said Haiya.
The Mayor of Lilongwe City Council, His Worship Richard Banda, expressed excitement about the four nations’ tournament participating in tree planting in the city.
“We are very excited about the tournament for taking part in mitigating climate change by planting trees. This is a wake-up call for Lilongwe residents to plant trees, as our friends from outside the country have demonstrated. Let me ask residents in this area to take good care of the trees,” Banda said.
The Flames lost 4-0 to Kenya in their opening match of the competition, while their neighbors were defeated through post-match penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
In the junior category, Malawi emerged as the champions after defeating Kenya 3-1 at the Silver Stadium on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
