The Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate Court is set to deliver its ruling this Friday on whether Chiyanjano Mbeza, recently arrested on cybercrime-related charges, will be granted bail.
According to state representative Charles Panyani, Mbeza faces accusations related to using his studio to produce and disseminate false content across various online platforms. These allegations include spreading misinformation that could potentially disrupt national peace and security.
The charges stem from publications implicating certain individuals in the tragic plane crash that claimed nine lives, including that of late Vice President Saulos Chilima.
Panyani further disclosed that investigations, currently at 80 percent completion, have led to the confiscation of studio materials by the police. He noted suspicions of involvement by other individuals in the case and expressed concerns that granting bail to Mbeza might hinder ongoing investigative processes.
The defense team, led by Gilbert Khonyongwa, voiced apprehensions over the police’s practice of making arrests before concluding thorough investigations.
In the interim, Chiyanjano Mbeza remains in custody pending the court’s decision on bail, expected after two days.
The outcome of Friday’s ruling will likely have significant implications for both the case and the broader conversation on free speech and media freedom in Malawi.
