Salima, Malawi – Malawi Congress Party (MCP) publicity secretary Jessie Kabwira has expressed concern over the growing support for the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the northern region. Kabwira made the remarks in Salima, where she addressed a sizeable crowd clad in MCP regalia.
“It’s worrisome to see that the northern region is supporting the opposition DPP,” Kabwira said, acknowledging the growing trend.
“We need to do something to reverse this trend and ensure that the MCP remains strong in the region.”
Kabwira’s concerns come as the DPP, led by President Peter Mutharika, makes significant inroads in the area, posing a threat to the MCP’s dominance.
The party has been actively campaigning in the northern region, with President Mutharika’s lieutenants making frequent visits to the area.
The MCP’s leadership has been accused of being out of touch with the grassroots, and there are concerns that the party may lose significant ground in the northern region if it does not address these issues.
As the campaign season heats up, the battle for the northern region will be a key factor in determining the outcome of next year’s elections.
Kabwira’s admission is a clear indication that the MCP is taking the threat seriously.
The party will need to do some soul-searching and come up with a strategy to reverse the trend and regain its dominance in the northern region.
