BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Two individuals who allegedly posed as officials from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and promised job opportunities in exchange for money have been granted bail after being charged with obtaining money by false pretence.

According to Blantyre’s Wenela Police station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Mary Chiponda the accused, Liness Danda and Francis Nembo, were reportedly collecting money from unsuspecting individuals under the guise of securing them employment with the MEC.

Nembo said the two falsely claimed to have official ties to the electoral body.

She further said the authorities arrested the pair and charged them with fraud.

She however said, in a surprising turn of events, the case has since been withdrawn, and both Danda and Nembo have been released on bail.

Meanwhile the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of the case remain unclear.

Police therefore urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving impersonation of government institutions.

Efforts to reach MEC Publicist Sangwani Mwafulirwa were unsuccessful, as he only promised to revert on the matter but did not follow through.
