The Thyolo First Grade Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to Philip Likulo, a 30-year-old man suspected of defiling and abusing a 15-year-old girl.
The court’s decision has been welcomed by the Girls Empowerment Network (GENET), which has expressed satisfaction with the ruling.
GENET’s Project Coordinator for Thyolo District, Charles Benson Nyerere, said the organization expects the court to hand down a stiff punishment to the suspect.
“We believe that the court’s decision is a step in the right direction,” Nyerere said, adding that, “We hope that the suspect will face the full force of the law and that justice will be served.”
The suspect, who is a Democratic Progressive Party aspirant councillor for the area, allegedly dragged the girl from her home and forced her into a nearby house, where he beat her until she lost consciousness and defiled her.
The matter was reported to the local chief by an eyewitness, and the girl was taken to Mangunda Health Centre for medical examination.
In denying bail, Magistrate Kondani Chinangwa agreed with the state’s assertion that the suspect holds influence in the area and could easily intimidate eyewitnesses, most of whom are minors. The court has adjourned the matter to May 19, when the state is expected to parade additional witnesses.
The case has sparked widespread outrage in the community, with many calling for justice for the victim.
The court’s decision to deny bail has been seen as a positive step towards ensuring that the suspect faces justice.
The case highlights the need for increased vigilance and action to protect children from abuse and exploitation. It also underscores the importance of ensuring that perpetrators of such crimes face the full force of the law.
As the case continues, many are watching with bated breath, hoping that justice will be served and that the victim will receive the support and protection she needs.
The outcome of this case will likely have significant implications for the community and for the fight against child abuse in Malawi.
