The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Ministry of Justice, Masauko Chamkakala, has pledged to ensure the effective utilisation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment donated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The equipment, valued at US$108,000, was handed over to the DPP’s office at a ceremony held at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
Chamkakala emphasised that the donated ICT equipment will play a critical role in supporting the DPP’s case management system and facilitating its transition to a fully electronic system.
“The equipment will support our ongoing shift from hard copy files to digital records, which is key to modernizing our operations and improving data-driven decision-making within the department,” Chamkakala said.
The assorted ICT equipment includes tablets, all-in-one computers, printers, servers, firewalls, and other network essentials.
According to Chamkakala, these tools will enhance the DPP’s ability to manage cases efficiently and effectively.
Nanise Saune-Qaloewai, a representative of UNDP, highlighted the significance of the donation as a symbol of the strong partnership between UNDP and the Government of Malawi.
“In today’s digital age, ICT is not a luxury but a necessity,” Saune-Qaloewai said, adding that, “For institutions like the DPP, it is vital for improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the justice system.”
The donation follows a formal request made by the DPP to UNDP in June 2024 for support with ICT infrastructure to enhance its Electronic Case Management System. UNDP responded by procuring the equipment to support the DPP’s office.
