LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s healthcare system is witnessing a significant number of fibroids cases, with 375 cases registered at Mzuzu and Queen Elizabeth Central hospitals in 2025 alone.
The cases are affecting women in their reproductive age group, specifically those between 25 years old, with symptoms such as constant pain in the lower abdomen, frequent urination, and heavy menstruation, according to Dr. Madalitso Kamvaunamwali, a Resident Doctor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Ethel Mutharika Maternity Wing.
At Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, out of 250 uterine fibroid cases registered, 26 were operated on, as reported by Gynaecologist Dingase Kumwenda.
Mzuzu Central Hospital registered 125 fibroids cases in 2025, with an average of 5 operations conducted every month, said Blessed Kondowe, Spokesperson for the hospital.
In January this year, 39 patients with fibroids were registered at Ethel Mutharika Maternity Wing, with 19 operations conducted.
The rising cases of fibroids highlight the need for increased awareness and improved healthcare services for women in Malawi.
