LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-MPICO, a member of Old Mutual Malawi on Monday, May 25, donated MK6.5 million towards Malawi Institute of Architects (MIA)’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated for Blantyre on May 27 to 28, 2026.

MPICO support is part of corporate social responsibility towards key stakeholders in the building industry for quality infrastructure development.

MPICO General Manager Stella Sokosa hinted that the supports is to enable MIA to achieve its conference agenda.

Sokosa observes, “The construction sector, like many others, is navigating real headwinds: foreign exchange shortages, erratic fuel supply, and rising input costs.

These are not abstract challenges; they are felt on every site and in every boardroom across the industry. “Yet we remain hopeful. It is through gatherings like this where professionals come together to share insights, challenge assumptions, and chart a way forward that lasting solutions are forged”.

She added, “MPICO recognises this, and we recognise our responsibility to play an active role in the growth and development of our country. We understand that architects give form to the structural visions that institutions like ours ultimately bring to life. That partnership matters to us deeply.

“Our goal, simply put, is to help Malawi THRIVE and we will continue to show up for the Institute and the broader sector whenever we are needed. As you finalise preparations for this important AGM, we wish you productive deliberations and meaningful outcomes”

In her remarks after receiving the donation, MIA Vice President Dorothy Nyong’onya expressed happiness over the timely support.

Nyong’onya observes that the sponsorship is crucial to allow MIA to convene a stronger, more focused AGM.

“We formally receive this sponsorship from MPICO Malawi in support of our 2026 Annual General Meeting. We meet under the theme “Architecture at Crossroads: Resilient Construction in Volatile Economic Environments” a theme that could not be more timely than now.

“Our sector is operating in a context of currency fluctuation, rising material costs, delayed payments, and constrained public spending. In such an environment, the ability to design, manage, and deliver projects that remain viable and durable is no longer a technical challenge alone. It is a test of financial discipline, risk management, and institutional resilience,” she said.

Nyong’onya lauds, “That is why MPICO’s partnership on this AGM matters. MPICO understands what it means to build resilience in uncertain conditions. For decades, MPICO has supported Malawians and Malawian institutions to plan for the long term through pensions, infrastructure investments, and risk protection. In the same way, architects are called to design buildings and systems that withstand not only physical stress, but economic stress.

“MPICO’s partnership on this AGM matters, and your role in the built environment is worth highlighting. MPICO is not only a leader in finance and investment but your ongoing infrastructure development you also act as a direct client and investor in Malawi’s construction sector. The projects being implemented by MPICO is a practical example of what our theme calls for: making significant capital commitments in an uncertain economy, managing risk, and demanding quality, cost control, and timely delivery from the design and construction teams”.

She explains further, “When an institution like MPICO chooses to build, it sends a signal of confidence in Malawi’s economy and in the capacity of local professionals. It also creates a live case study for the very issues we will be discussing at the AGM—how to structure contracts fairly, how to manage cost escalation, how to ensure compliance and sustainability, and how to align design with long-term value.

The AGM is bringing together over 120 membership to interrogate practical solutions: how to cost realistically, contract fairly, finance sustainably, and design for adaptability.
