BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi media fraternity is in mourning following the untimely death of Timveni correspondent Gerald Viyuyi, who passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
Media Institute of Southern Africa Malawi Chapter, MISA Malawi, announced the death through a statement signed by Chairperson Felix Washon.
The organization described Viyuyi as a dedicated journalist whose professionalism and commitment to service will be dearly missed.
Viyuyi began his journalism career at the now defunct All for Jesus Television.
He later worked for Angaliba and Living Waters Church Radio, and also contributed to several online news platforms during his career.
Colleagues remember him for his dedication to telling community stories and his steady presence in the broadcast and digital media space.
“MISA Malawi is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Timveni correspondent Gerald Viyuyi. He dedicated his life to journalism and the Malawi media will dearly miss his professionalism and dedication to service,” the statement read.
According to MISA Malawi, vigil is being held at Luwanda in Machinjiri, Blantyre.
Burial will take place on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at Uliwa, Traditional Authority Wasambo in Karonga district, his home area.
The media body has extended condolences to the Viyuyi family, his colleagues at Timveni, and the entire media fraternity, saying the loss is felt across newsrooms in the country.
Viyuyi’s death adds to the growing list of Malawian journalists lost in recent years, sparking renewed calls for better welfare and health support for media practitioners who often work under demanding conditions to keep the public informed.
