LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Government has announced a major cabinet restructuring after President Arthur Peter Mutharika split Ministry of Energy and Mining into two separate ministries.

The announcement was made through an official press release issued from Capital Hill in Lilongwe on May 29, 2026.

According to the statement, President Mutharika exercised powers vested in him under Section 94(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi to effect the changes.

The restructuring creates two standalone ministries: the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Mining.

In the new appointments Jean Mathanga has been named Minister of Energy Thoko Tembo has been appointed Minister of Mining. The government said the appointments take effect immediately.

The press release was signed by Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Adack Saidi.

Government described the move as a strategic administrative adjustment aimed at improving efficiency and focus in managing Malawi’s energy and mining sectors.

Both sectors are regarded as critical to Malawi’s economic development agenda due to their potential to drive industrial growth, attract investment, and create jobs.

Analysts say separating the ministries will allow authorities to give more specialized attention to the unique challenges and opportunities in each sector.

Malawi has in recent years faced persistent energy challenges, including electricity shortages and limited rural electrification, which continue to affect businesses and households.

At the same time, the mining sector has drawn increasing attention due to Malawi’s untapped mineral resources and growing international interest in exploration.

The appointments of Mathanga and Thoko Tembo are expected to place renewed focus on policy implementation and sectoral reforms.

Political observers say the restructuring may also signal government’s intention to accelerate economic recovery and improve public sector performance ahead of key national development targets.

The announcement has already sparked public discussion on the potential impact of the split on service delivery, investment confidence, and national economic growth.

Government officials have not yet provided details on operational changes, budget allocations, or administrative transitions resulting from the separation.

The decision marks one of the notable cabinet adjustments by President Mutharika as his administration continues reorganizing strategic government institutions.
