DOWA-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) on Monday called upon Malawi Parliament to swiftly pass the much awaited Disaster Risk Management Bill into the law.
The call comes after five years of waiting the law which will help implementation of Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Policies among others.
CISONECC National Coordinator Julius Ng’oma told the Maravi Post during stakeholder dialogue on the state of play on government policies, strategies and plans, Mponera in Dowa that the delay in passing the bill into law has made environmental management on disaster to be a difficult task.
Ng’oma observed that the fight against effects of climate change lacks feasible and practical laws in place.
He also noted that access to Global Climate Change fund remains a challenge for developing nation in adaptation measures.
“The Disaster Risk Management Bill has been long enough hence the call for quick passing it into a law. We have been engaging Parliamentarians on the same. But it seems there is political interference on the matter.
“This bill once is passed into law; implementations of climate change related policies will be easy. This will also help guiding adaptation strategies among the locals”, says Ng’oma.
CISONECC, with support from Irish Aid and Scottish Government through Trocaire under the Resource Rights Programme (RRP); Climate Advocacy Project (CAP) and support from Scottish Government through Trocaire and SCIAF under the Climate Change Challenge Program Malawi (CCPM); Climate Justice Advocacy Project (CJAP) respectively, is planning to hold a stakeholder dialogue on the state of play of Government policies and plans related to resilience building in Malawi.
The dialogue aimed at creating a platform for providing input into the various Climate Change Disaster Risk Management policies, strategies and plans.
The meeting also prepared the various stakeholders especially the Civil Society for further engagement with the various relevant duty bearers in the Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management sectors on various issues emanating from the dialogue related to the sectoral policies, strategies and plans.
