LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Lazarus Chakwera lived up to his promise by allocating plots in Area 45 in Lilongwe to all players and officials.
Chakwera pledge fulfilment has excited Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers.
The plots are near Likuni Roundabout and are in honour of the Scorchers for winning their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship following a 2-1 victory over Zambia in South Africa last year.
Chakwera, who hosted the Scorchers to a luncheon at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on October 18 as an appreciation for the feat, promised each member of the squad a piece of land of 30 metres by 25 metres.
Then, on top of the plots, Chakwera also rewarded each member of the team with K1.5 million. However, the climax was Friday as the players and officials received their offer letters and were allocated their plots.
Each plot is valued at MK11 million.
After handing over the plots, Principal Secretary Responsible for Administration in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi said the players deserved the plots for putting Malawi on the map.
“This is a motivation to the players to continue doing well in international competitions. The President is committed to promote all sports codes in the country. All the athletes who will do well will be rewarded for the sweat,” Mtumodzi said.
On his part, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) First Vice President Madalitso Kuyera thanked Chakwera for providing the plots to the players and officials.
“We believe the players are motivated. We will make sure that the Scorchers participate in all tournaments that are available,” Kuyera said.
Scorchers vice-captain Madyina Ngulube said it was a dream come true to get a plot.
“On behalf of the players, I thank the President, Chakwera, for what he has done. We will continue working hard to make the nation proud,” Ngulube said.
The Scorchers won their first ever Cosafa Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2-1 in the final.
During the tournament, Malawi beat South Africa 4-3 in the opening match before thrashing Eswatini 8-0 before beating Madagascar 3-1.
In the semi-final, the Scorchers defeated Mozambique 2-1.
Striker Temwa Chawinga was named player of the tournament and also won the golden boot award after scoring nine goals.
