CISONECC empowers Neno communities to demand centralized renewable energy technologies

NENO-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) has intensified empowerment among the locals in a bid demand decentralized renewable energy technologies.

This therefore will unable communities to increase access to renewable energy technologies and eventually improve the general energy access in Malawi.

With funding from the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) in partnership with Christian Aid, CISONECC is instilling lobbying skills to Neno district’s communities.

The trainings targeted CBOs, CSOs, youth groups, women groups, FBOs, political authorities and traditional leaders at community level.

The district is currently potential base for power generating including Kamwamba coal power plant that communities need to lobby alternative source of energy.

CISONECC National Coordinator Julius Ng’oma told The Maravi Post after conducting sensitization, lobbying and advocacy training on renewable energy at Kasenjere TDC, Traditional Authority (T.A) Simon, in the district on Wednesday, November 20 that communities deserve better understanding of any development in their localities for informed decision.

Ng’oma said communities deserve affordable clean source of energy technologies for daily needs.

“CISONECC initially engaged CSOs and other district stakeholders including Neno District council and local development structures in training on energy policies, legal frameworks, government plans and stakeholders’ role in supporting the implementation of these policies

“The project also focuses on imparting Lobbying and advocacy skills to CSOs and local development structures to be able demand decentralized renewable energy technologies at community and district level to increase access to renewable energy technologies and eventually improve the general energy access in Malawi”, says Ng’oma.

Village Head Kasamba lauded CISONECC for enlightenment that will be able demand clean source of energy.

Kasamba observed that for a long time the communities have not yet benefited from non-renewable energies including much touted coal plant energy.  

The project is supported under the African Coalition for Sustainable Energy and Access (ACSEA) thematic initiative.

It’s expected to empower communities with relevant lobbying and advocacy techniques to influence leaders on clean and sustainable energy sources and advocacy and Lobbying action plan for renewable energy sources developed, and developed Success stories and Best practices from communities.
