Civil rights grouping CFCE condemns Lazarus Chakwera over “divisive” funeral remarks

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-A local civil society grouping, Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE), has strongly condemned remarks made by former President Lazarus Chakwera, describing them as inflammatory and harmful to national unity.

In a press statement seen by Maravi Post, released on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 and signed by Chairperson Edward Kambanje the organization said it was “appalled and disappointed” by comments attributed to Chakwera during a funeral ceremony held in Malembo Village on April 6,2026.

CfCE argued that the former president’s remarks risk stirring emotions and deepening divisions among Malawians at a time when the country needs cohesion and stability.

Kambanje stated that it firmly stands for the promotion of free and fair electoral processes, as well as strengthening democratic values and warned against rhetoric that undermines these principles.

According to the statement, Chakwera’s comments suggesting that those who fought for Malawi’s liberation had “hands stained with blood” were particularly offensive and disrespectful to national heroes.

CfCE described such statements as a “gross insult” to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, emphasizing that Malawians have already chosen a path of peace and development.

The group further stressed that leaders, especially those who have held high office, must exercise responsibility in their public statements to avoid creating unnecessary tension.

It called on all political figures to respect the will of the people and focus on building a better future rather than engaging in divisive discourse.

CfCE also urged Chakwera to refrain from making remarks that could fuel discord, instead encouraging him to promote unity and reconciliation among citizens.

The organization highlighted that Malawi is at a critical stage where healing and collaboration are needed to address national challenges.

In a firm demand, CfCE called on the former president to issue a public apology for his statements and commit himself to advancing peace and unity in the country.
