BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Former Malawi leader Bakili Muluzi has advised incumbent Lazarus Chakwera to conced defeats.
Muluzi told Zodia online that on Monday he called and asked Chakwera through telephone to concede defeat and congratulate Peter Mutharika for winning the September 16 elections.
The former Malawi leader added that he told Chakwera that “doing so would ensure there is peace and stability in the country”.
Muluzi observed that, “This morning that it is clear now that Mutharika has won the race and one way to quell high tempers is for president Chakwera to make a public statement conceeding defeat.
“There is life after statehouse. l have therefore requested president Chakwera to call Peter Mutharika to congratulate him, “said Muluzi.
Muluzi has also asked Malawians to remain calm and avoid violence when the result is made public.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is yet to make final determination of the winner after Mutharika beat Chakwera in 24 district councils out of 36.
