A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe, as seven individuals accused of using fake letters to obtain service passports have been released from custody.
The suspects, who were arrested by the Department of Immigration last Thursday, allegedly claimed to be directors in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture to support their passport applications for travel to the United States for work.
The release of the suspects, identified as Mr. Madalitso Kapangazina, Mrs. Maria Chimana, Ms. Sarah Nanthoka, Mr. Stain Ethics Mabere, Chinsisi Richard Phiri, Thandi Aresandra Phiri, and Zaithwa Boston Kamanga, has sparked widespread controversy.
According to sources, influential government and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials intervened, contacting immigration officials to secure their release.

The suspects were arrested after immigration officials discovered discrepancies in their documentation.
The fake letters, purportedly from the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture, were used to support their applications for service passports.
The suspects intended to travel to the United States for work, claiming to be directors in the respective ministries.
The incident has raised serious concerns about corruption and undue influence in Malawi’s immigration system. The Department of Immigration has faced operational issues and allegations of corruption in recent months.
The release of the suspects has sparked questions about the integrity of Malawi’s passport system and the role of influential individuals in undermining the law.
This is not the first time Malawi’s passport system has faced scrutiny. In 2023, the country was placed on a US watchlist over the issuance of diplomatic passports to shady individuals, including a Nigerian businessman convicted of fraud.
The latest development has reignited concerns about the vulnerability of Malawi’s passport system to abuse.
The Malawi Congress Party’s involvement in the release of the suspects has also raised eyebrows. Sources suggest that a party loyalist may have masterminded the scandal.
The party’s influence in the matter has sparked questions about the rule of law and the accountability of those in power.
As the controversy continues to unfold, many are left wondering about the implications of this incident for Malawi’s immigration system.
Will those responsible for the scandal be held accountable, or will they continue to operate with impunity? Only time will tell.
