BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Tension continues to escalate in Malawi’s political arena following a harrowing assassination attempt on Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) leader Enock Chihana in Kasungu West.

The incident, which took place on Thursday afternoon, August 7, 2025 has sent ripples of concern through the country’s opposition ranks and raised questions about the state of political violence in Malawi.

Chihana and his convoy were returning from a political rally held at Chalowa School in Traditional Authority (T.A) Mawawa when their vehicles were abruptly blocked by a group of suspected thugs armed with pangas.

The attackers reportedly launched a violent assault aimed at eliminating the popular opposition leader whose influence has been growing steadily in the central region.

According to party officials, this was no mere act of robbery or random attack.

Instead, they claim it was a well-orchestrated political assassination attempt allegedly orchestrated by operatives linked to the ruling party.

Chris Thaulo, AFORD’s Deputy Secretary General, expressed grave concern over the incident, stating, “This was not a robbery. This was a coordinated political attack. The crocodiles are hungry – they want blood. But democracy will prevail.”

The phrase “crocodiles are hungry” has become a powerful metaphor within the party, symbolizing the ruthless and predatory nature of their political opponents who are desperate to maintain power by any means necessary.

Thaulo’s words underline the intensity of the political rivalry in Malawi, especially as opposition figures like Chihana gain momentum.

Chihana himself has remained resolute and undeterred by the attack. In a brief statement, he condemned the violent act and called for calm while urging the government to ensure the safety and security of all political actors.

“Our struggle for democracy and justice will not be silenced by violence or intimidation,” Chihana affirmed.

The incident has sparked outrage among civil society organizations and human rights activists who have called on the Malawian government to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice.

They warn that continued political violence threatens to undermine Malawi’s democratic progress and stability.

Kasungu West, a key battleground in the ongoing political contest, has witnessed increasing tensions in recent months.

The attack on Chihana is seen by many as a dangerous escalation that could provoke further unrest if not addressed promptly and transparently.

As Malawi approaches a critical period in its political calendar, the survival of Enock Chihana serves both as a stark reminder of the perilous nature of political engagement in the country and as a rallying point for those committed to peaceful democratic processes.

The eyes of the nation and international observers remain fixed on Kasungu as the situation develops.
