Gerald Kampanikiza, a candidate contesting the parliamentary seat in Dedza-Boma, rushed to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) reception centre this morning, leaving his polling agents behind.
When asked about the urgency of his visit, Kampanikiza explained that he was concerned about the results from his constituency.
He claimed that some individuals had kept polling materials at their homes before the official verification process was completed.
Kampanikiza said that his primary request was for the constituency results to be rechecked to ensure accuracy.
He added that there are legal mechanisms available that can help halt the announcement of results until due process is followed.
The District Commissioner (DC) for Dedza, Oscar Kumwenda, declined to provide detailed comments, noting only that Kampanikiza had formally submitted his polling materials to the MEC headquarters.
According to reports, the constituency results arrived at the district tally centre late last night but have not yet been fully verified.
Observers say this development highlights the importance of transparency and proper handling of polling materials to maintain confidence in the electoral process.
Brian Chigumula, the correspondent reporting from Dedza, noted that such incidents underscore ongoing tensions and anxieties among candidates in tightly contested areas.
