LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Secretary for Education, Chikondano Mussa, has expressed appreciation for the active involvement of the public in the curriculum review meetings facilitated by the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE).

Speaking on Saturday at Nsalura Secondary School hall in Salima district, Mussa assured that inputs gathered during the meetings would undergo thorough scrutiny, and this could potentially result in changes to existing subjects or the introduction of new ones.

She further disclosed that the revised curriculum is anticipated to be implemented in the upcoming academic year.

“I am happy that participants have given their suggestions to include business lessons, technical subjects and also to consider Home Economics among some important critical subjects.

“I am impressed because parents are here and they have given brilliant views which will be used in coming up with a new curriculum,” Mussa said.

The MIE initiated the curriculum review meetings in education districts nationwide from January 16th to 20th, 2024, concluding with final sessions in Salima and Mzuzu districts.

Deputy Chairperson for the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) Salima District, Sheikh Haluni Chapola, commended the Ministry of Education for conducting consultative meetings to allow the citizenry to fully contribute their views to the curriculum.

“We applaud the Ministry of Education for considering everyone to participate in curricular review. As Muslims, we observed that the current curriculum promotes double shifts which in turn keep students busy with circular lessons while religious lessons suffer. We hope that this will be looked into to balance,” he said.

In 2023, the Ministry of Education through MIE embarked on a review process of the pre-primary, primary, secondary, and teacher education curricula to realign them with the Malawi 2063 agenda.

The consultative meetings took place in all the Six Education Divisions and Salima attracted 104 participants from all walks of life.
