BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi national Netball team (THE QUEENS) have been crowned champions of the 2022 COSANA Tri-Nations Netball Tournament which was taking place in the commercial city of Blantyre.

Queens defeated the Desert Jewels 49 goals to 34 in their last game played in Thursday’s evening at Kamuzu University of Health Science (KUHES).

Malawi Queens

The Queens started slowly in the first quarter as Namibia dominated and contrary to peoples anticipation Namibia led Malawi by 12 goals to 6.

After sensing danger coach Peach Kalua Chawinga made several changes,taking out Takondwa Lwazi on Center and 2nd quarter ended Malawi 22-18 Namibia and 3rd gone Queens led Desert Jewels by 38 goals to 26 at regulation it was Malawi 49-37.

Malawi has managed to beat Zimbabwe and Namibia three times in the competition.Malawi has scored 156 goals against 92 goals for Zimbabwe in the three meeting,Malawi 47-35 Zimbabwe, Malawi 63-34 Zimbabwe and last game 47-35.

The Queens have however scored 186 goals against 84 for the Desert Jewels of Namibia in three games.Queens defeat Namibia 60-23 in the first meeting, in their second meeting Desert Jewels were humiliated by 77 goals to 25 and the last game on Thursday evening, Namibia lost by 49 goals to 36.

The whole competition Malawi Queens have managed to bang 342 goals and conceded 176 goals.With Tendai Masamba, Jane Chimaliro,Towera Vinkhumbo and Takondwa Lwazi being the outstanding players.

Despite being the Champions of the COSANA Tri-Nations Netball Tournament Malawi team has huge task to do a head of Birmingham City, Commonwealth games, Queens has to work on foot fault and turn overs among the areas.

Zimbabwe Under 19 have been crowned champions of the junior tournament.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM)President Abigail Sharif said the competition has gone very well in Blantyre and hailed COSANA for organising the tournament after 11 years.

“The tournament has helped our girls to see areas which they are supposed to rectify before Commonwealth games, our netball declined for the recent past hence this tournament will also help our Queens to retain their position 6 on INF even going further”,

” I am very thankful to the Sponsors FDH for the timely Sponsorship and let me ask other stakeholders to come in and support the Queens,we have big tournaments a head of us. South Africa will be hosting World Cup hence their support will also bear fruits in the near future “,Sharif joyfully said.

Leaticia Chipandu Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations President said their goal to host Tri-Nations Netball Tournament in Malawi has been achieved, she said Transport for the participating teams was timely and the in-door court which was of international standards.

“Malawi could have generated more revenue from these games if they had In-door court with good capacity to accommodate more spectators, the revenue could helped them in preparations for other tourneys.

We also conducted trainings of umpires which was one of our goals which will help develop the sport in Africa. This was crucial tourney as teams were able to polish up their teams a head of Commonwealth,I am sad that other COSANA nations didn’t manage to participate”, Chipandu explained.

In attendance on the final day was minister of Youths and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda who has promised massive support to the Queens.
