Fake healer arrested after failing to deliver promised Mali AFCON victory

BAMAKO-(MaraviPost)-A local spiritual practitioner in Mali has been arrested and charged with fraud after allegedly collecting €33,500 from football supporters by claiming he could guarantee the country’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The suspect, widely described as a traditional healer, was taken into custody in Bamako following Mali’s 1–0 defeat to Senegal in the AFCON quarter finals, a result that ended the team’s campaign and sparked outrage among contributors.

According to police sources, the man had assured supporters that through spiritual intervention he would ensure Mali lifted the continental trophy.

In return, he reportedly demanded and received large sums of money from individuals who believed in his claims.

When Mali failed to progress beyond the quarter finals, angry donors confronted the practitioner and demanded refunds, accusing him of deception and false promises.

The situation escalated, prompting police intervention to prevent possible violence.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect is facing fraud related charges, noting that misrepresentation and charlatanism are offences punishable under Malian law.He is currently being held as investigations continue.

Reports indicate that the man had gained prominence shortly before the tournament, allegedly using social networks and word of mouth to market his supposed powers and solicit funds from football fans desperate for national success.

The incident has reignited debate in Mali over the exploitation of religious and cultural beliefs, particularly during emotionally charged events such as major football tournaments.

Meanwhile, Malian football supporters have been urged to remain calm and channel their disappointment constructively, as the national team reflects on its AFCON exit and plans for future competitions.
