Desperate time; Malawi President Mutharika appoints Lieutenant General Vincent Nundwe as new Army Commander

LILONGWE, MaraviPost: General Vincent Nundwe was born on 20 December 1957. He was 60 years on 20th December 2018.  Therefore, the last two years he was allowed to serve beyond the Army’s retirement age thanks to Malawi President Peter Mutharika.

According to the MDF Act, retirement age for any serving MDF member is 60 years.

Many of his friends left, and he personally pushed that the retirement age be adjusted upwards to 65 years for every Brigadier General for him to continue serving and 62 years for the rest of the soldiers.

The bill was passed in parliament somewhere in late 2018 but was only assented to by President Peter Mutharika to become law in February 2019.

Therefore, the amended bill came into effect when Lt Gen Nundwe had already reached retirement age.

President Peter Mutharika gave him a contract of 2 years subject to renewal.

He served MDF in this capacity from 21 Dec 2018 until the day a new General was appointed, which was done legally yesterday.

Basically, Peter Mutharika appointed a person who was already set for retirement age as MDF Commander.

The contract was like any other contract in the civil service.
