LILONGWE Maravipost: Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Msozi North, Sosten Gwengwe, has expressed strong support for the government’s “Malawi First” strategy, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and reducing dependence on donor aid.
Speaking during a public rally held at Chatata Ground in Lilongwe City Centre Constituency, the former Minister of Trade and Finance said the time has come for Malawi to prioritize its own development agenda using internal resources.
Gwengwe likened the initiative to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy, noting that Malawi, too, must place its interests at the forefront of national development efforts.

“Just as President Trump advocated for America to prioritize its own interests, Malawi must now focus on developing its economy and systems using the resources we have,” Gwengwe said.
He commended the government’s commitment to implementing the strategy without relying on donor aid, saying it was a bold move that would help the country grow stronger and more independent.
The “Malawi First” strategy aims to boost local industry, promote domestic investment, and encourage citizens to support locally made products and services.
Gwengwe’s remarks come at a time when the government is pushing for more sustainable and locally-driven economic policies, signaling a shift towards long-term self-sufficiency.
