In the annals of heroism, certain names shine brightly, etched permanently in the collective memory of a nation. Others, despite their extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, are cruelly forgotten, left to fade into obscurity as political powers shift and promises evaporate.
Bamusi Jantina, a young man from Mulanje, is one such forgotten hero—a beacon of courage during a catastrophic flood on Nkando Bridge, whose selfless actions saved countless lives.
Yet, since 2023, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government under President Lazarus Chakwera has done nothing to honor or support this young man who risked everything, overshadowing his heroics with neglect and silence.
The story of Bamusi Jantina is not just an inspiring tale of individual bravery; it is a glaring indictment of a government that has consistently failed to recognize and reward true patriotism and sacrifice.
When a flood trapped over 100 people on Nkando Bridge, it was not the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) that rose to the occasion as expected, but a young man known as Bamusi Jantina, whose skilled swimming and determination turned a dire situation into a rescue mission of hope.
Despite the immense danger, Jantina and four other soldiers ventured into the floodwaters, fully aware of the risks. Their boat’s engine failed shortly after they reached the stranded victims, leaving them vulnerable in the raging waters.
Three soldiers managed to swim to safety, but two clung desperately to a tree branch, stranded and vulnerable. It was Jantina’s quick thinking and incredible swimming prowess that saved not just the trapped civilians but also soldiers.
He swam back to shore to alert rescuers, leading to the eventual successful rescue of the stranded soldiers ordered by the Minister of Homeland Security.
This act alone should have elevated Jantina to national hero status, a symbol of courage and selflessness.
Instead, he has been left in limbo, his promised inclusion in the military—a recognition he earned through extraordinary deeds—never realized.
Since 2023, the MCP government never did anything indifferent to the plight of a young man who did what the MDF failed to do: save lives when it mattered most.
This neglect is not just a personal injustice to Bamusi Jantina; it is a broader reflection of the then MCP government’s failure to honor the values it purports to uphold.
Leadership is not just about holding office or making speeches—it is about recognizing and uplifting those who embody service and sacrifice.
By ignoring Jantina, the MCP government sent a chilling message to all Malawians: heroism is not enough if it does not serve political convenience.
Moreover, this failure starkly contrasts with the promises made by the MCP government.
Public declarations in 2023 assured that Jantina would be integrated into the military as a reward for his valor. Yet, these pledges have been nothing more than empty words.
The silence since then has been deafening, with no tangible actions to support or acknowledge Jantina’s contributions.
This abandonment is deeply disappointing and raises uncomfortable questions about the priorities of the MCP administration when it was in government.
It is essential to understand that neglecting a hero like Jantina does more than just harm one individual—it erodes the fabric of national pride and trust.
Young people across Malawi look to role models who demonstrate courage and commitment to community and country. When such figures are ignored, it diminishes the inspiration that fuels future generations.
It also undermines the morale of those currently serving or aspiring to serve in the armed forces, suggesting that bravery and dedication may go unrewarded.
In light of this glaring failure by the then MCP government, the call for justice and recognition for Private Jantina cannot be overstated.
It is here that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, under President Peter Mutharika, could—and should—play a pivotal role.
Despite the political divide, honoring a true hero transcends partisan politics.
President Mutharika’s administration has a unique opportunity to rectify this oversight, to restore dignity and recognition to a young man whose bravery saved lives and whose loyalty to Malawi remains unshaken.
President Mutharika’s government must actively seek out Bamusi Jantina, listen to his story, and fulfill the promises made—whether by appointing him formally into the military or by providing other meaningful support and acknowledgment.
This is not merely a matter of reward but a statement about the values Malawi stands for: courage, sacrifice, and the protection of its people.
Mulanje, a district known for its resilience and spirited communities, deserves to see its heroes remembered and celebrated.
Bamusi Jantina is a son of Mulanje whose actions brought honor to his people and whose memory should be enshrined in national consciousness.
To ignore him is to betray the very spirit of patriotism that all governments, regardless of political affiliation, should cherish.
This is also a chance for Malawi’s leaders to set a precedent for future emergencies.
Recognizing and supporting heroes like Jantina encourages a culture of bravery and readiness in the face of adversity.
It sends a clear message that the nation stands behind those who risk their lives for the safety and well-being of others.
The MCP government under Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership had egregiously failed to honor and support Bamusi Jantina, a young hero who displayed unmatched valor during a national crisis.
This neglect was not just an individual injustice but a national shame that reflected poorly on the government’s commitment to its people.
It is now incumbent upon the DPP government under President Peter Mutharika to step in, remember this forgotten hero of Mulanje, and correct the wrongs of the past.
In doing so, Malawi will not only restore a young man’s rightful place but also reaffirm its dedication to the values that truly define a nation.
Bamusi Jantina’s story is a call to conscience—a reminder that heroes are not born from titles or politics but from courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to others.
It is time for Malawi’s leaders to rise to the occasion and honor this young man whose bravery saved lives when it mattered most. The nation owes him nothing less.
