Mtalimanja

By Jones Gadama

If I were Anabel Mtalimanja, I would find myself at a crossroads, grappling with the weight of expectations and the challenges that come with leading the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

The recent complaints from electoral stakeholders, particularly the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), highlight the intense scrutiny and pressure that accompany such a pivotal role in our democracy.

The calls for my resignation, alongside that of the MEC’s CEO, would weigh heavily on my conscience. I would wish to embody the strength and integrity of my late father, the revered JZU, who navigated the complexities of leadership with grace and determination.

In this moment, I would reflect on the demands for the suspension of a technology that was intended to streamline our electoral process but has now become a focal point of contention.

If I were in a position to influence the decision, I would advocate for a thorough review of the system, ensuring that it meets the expectations of transparency and reliability that our citizens deserve.

The call for manual voting, counting, and transmission of results resonates deeply with the desire for accountability and trust in our electoral processes. I would wish to champion these principles, ensuring that every vote is counted and that the voices of the people are heard loud and clear.

Moreover, the engagement of independent ICT auditors is a crucial step towards restoring faith in our electoral system.

If I were the MEC chair, I would prioritize this initiative, recognizing that an impartial assessment of our technology and processes is essential for fostering confidence among all stakeholders.

I would strive to create an environment where collaboration and dialogue are encouraged, bridging the gap between the commission and the political parties that play a vital role in our democracy.

Alas, I am not Anabel Mtalimanja, nor will I ever be. I am simply Jones Gadama alias Twinkspurge armed with an acidic pen and surely it is my armour
