BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a decisive move, the Ministry of Lands, in collaboration with the Malawi Police and Malawi Defence Force, demolished illegal structures in Lilongwe’s Area 43 last night.

Lands Minister Deus Gumba stated that the operation specifically targeted buildings constructed without proper approval, posing safety risks to occupants and nearby properties.

Minister Gumba emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing land laws, warning against encroaching on land without clearance.

This crackdown reflects the government’s efforts to maintain order and ensure proper development in the capital city.

The ministry is working closely with the Malawi Housing Corporation and Lilongwe City Council to reclaim land and promote orderly development.

This action aligns with Vice President Saulos Chilima’s earlier stance on illegal structures, where he advised the Lilongwe City Council to demolish houses constructed illegally, particularly along the Lingadzi River, to prevent flooding and protect innocent lives.

The Supreme Court has also been vocal about the need for strict action against unauthorized constructions, emphasizing that such structures must be demolished to uphold the rule of law and prevent a culture of impunity.

The government’s firm stance on illegal structures aims to safeguard citizens and promote sustainable urban development.

By working together with key stakeholders, the Ministry of Lands is set to reclaim and redevelop affected areas, ensuring that Lilongwe remains a safe and orderly city for all its residents.
