LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-More than 4,000 patients have recovered from fistula disease in the country since 2015 representing 86 percent.
Bwaira Hospital Clinician, Patrick Nampandeni disclosed the development during fistula media workshop in the Lilongwe.
Napandeni said former fistula patients have played a big role in bringing in new patients for treatment as they are posing as fistula ambassadors.
Napandeni said fistula foundation has managed to reach out to many through UNFPA initiative which has brought out 7 spotlights districts including Machinga, Dowa, Mangochi, Mulanje, Nsanje and Mzimba.
Fistula Ambassador, Sofileti Mbewe says she has managed to bring in 11 fistula patients to the hospital after recovering from the disease she suffered for 11 years.
Mbewe said being one of the victim she stands as a role model in disseminating information to the fistula patients.
“I’m a victim of early marriage as I had my first child when I was just 15 years old and my husband run away from me after discovering my problem,” said Mbewe.
She adds that after the successful surgery she was given a solar panel gadget to take home to use in bringing lights at her place as a motivation.
