The Minister of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering women and achieving gender equality in Malawi.

Speaking at a press briefing dubbed “Boma Likutinji” at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Sendeza highlighted significant progress made in promoting gender equality.

The progress includes strengthening policies such as the National Plan of Action to enhance women’s economic and political participation.

Sendeza noted that this has led to increased representation of women in politics and decision-making positions in the public service, a crucial step towards achieving gender equality.

To further support women’s economic empowerment, the government has implemented the Women Economic Empowerment Programme.

A key component of this program is the establishment of the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF), designed to broaden women’s access to finance.

This initiative aims to address the financial barriers that often hinder women’s ability to participate fully in the economy.

Sendeza’s remarks underscore the government’s commitment to creating an environment that supports women’s empowerment and gender equality.

By implementing policies and programs tailored to address specific challenges faced by women, the government demonstrates its dedication to promoting inclusive development.

The importance of incorporating women and girls in innovation and technology was also emphasized by Sendeza on a different occasion. She highlighted that access to innovation and digital technology is crucial for women and girls to realize their full potential.

The Minister noted that the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa (2020-2030) advocates for reducing the gap by putting women and girls at the center of technological change.

The Ministry of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare continues to work towards promoting gender equality and empowering women.

Recent activities include the launch of the National Male Engagement Strategy, which recognizes the critical role men and boys play in efforts to end gender-based violence.

As Malawi moves forward, the government’s commitment to empowering women and achieving gender equality is evident in its policies and programs. By continuing to support initiatives that promote women’s economic and political participation, the government can ensure a more inclusive and equitable society for all Malawians.

The government’s efforts to empower women and achieve gender equality are multifaceted and aimed at addressing the specific challenges faced by women.

Through initiatives like the Women Economic Empowerment Programme and the National Economic Empowerment Fund, women in Malawi are being given the tools and resources they need to succeed. As the country continues on this path, it is likely to see significant progress in promoting gender equality and empowering women.
