BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Navicha, led a poignant ceremony to pay homage to World War fallen heroes at the Zomba Memorial War Pillar on Sunday.

The event commemorated the sacrifices of those who fought in the two World Wars under the King’s African Rifles (KAR) and other conflicts.

Representing President Professor Peter Mutharika, Minister Navicha arrived at the memorial pillar at 10:58 am, minutes before 11 am, marking the exact time the Second World War ended in 1918.

A guard of honor, two minutes of silence, and the sounding of maroons honored the fallen heroes.

The minister laid a wreath, followed by Brigadier General Harison Kandula of the Malawi Defence Forces, Stain Bamusi Chaima, Deputy Inspector General of Police, and other dignitaries, including Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Esther Jolobala, and Moses Kunkuyu, representing the Leader of Opposition.

The ceremony also acknowledged the contributions of living and serving soldiers in safeguarding their countries and remembered the sacrifices of departed and ex-service soldiers in various operations.

Remembrance Day, globally celebrated on November 11, honors the end of World War I and recognizes the sacrifices of those who served in conflicts worldwide.
