The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has announced that it will use this year’s Elective Annual General Conference to reflect on issues of professionalism and accountability among lawyers in the country.

The highly anticipated conference is scheduled to take place this weekend in Mangochi, where legal practitioners will engage in discussions aimed at improving ethical standards and integrity within the profession.

MLS Chief Executive Officer, Chrispin Ngunde, made this statement today in Blantyre while receiving a financial donation from the National Bank of Malawi.

Ngunde expressed gratitude to the National Bank of Malawi for its generous support, which will contribute significantly to the successful organization of the conference.

The financial assistance came in the form of a five-million-kwacha cheque, which the bank handed over to the society to assist in covering the costs associated with the event.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, National Bank of Malawi Company Secretary, Zunzo Mitole, emphasized the importance of professionalism in the legal sector.

Mitole concurred with Ngunde on the need to uphold ethical standards within the legal profession to ensure that lawyers operate with integrity and accountability.

She further stated that the bank recognizes the crucial role that the legal profession plays in driving economic growth and maintaining the stability of the business environment.

According to Mitole, a strong and ethical legal sector is the backbone of any thriving economy, as it provides legal certainty and fosters confidence among investors.

She explained that National Bank of Malawi views its financial support for the Malawi Law Society as part of its broader corporate social responsibility initiatives.

By supporting the MLS conference, the bank aims to contribute to strengthening the legal profession and promoting a culture of ethical legal practice in Malawi.

The upcoming conference is expected to attract legal practitioners from across the country, providing a platform for discussions on pressing issues affecting the profession.

Topics such as legal ethics, accountability, judicial independence, and the role of lawyers in upholding justice will be at the center of deliberations during the event.

The conference will also serve as an opportunity for MLS members to elect new leadership that will steer the society forward in addressing legal and professional challenges.

With financial backing from institutions like the National Bank of Malawi, the MLS hopes to continue promoting high standards of legal practice in the country.

Stakeholders in the legal and business sectors have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that a well-regulated and accountable legal profession benefits the entire nation.

As the conference approaches, expectations are high that it will produce meaningful resolutions that will enhance professionalism and accountability among lawyers in Malawi.
