MZUZU (Maravi Post)–Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jappie Mhango on Monday regarded the Saturday’s chopping hands of a 52 year old albino woman in Chitipa as a surprise to the country’s security.Mhango was speaking after visiting the victim at Mzuzu Central hospital.
According to the Minister, government did not expect such tragedy development as it thought that the awareness message brought to the community was enough.
“Frankly as government, we thought all is well especially with the messages as well as sensitization campaigns that the police and all other partners carried out particularly on the matter,” said Mhango.
“However, this has taught us to be awake and we shall hunt down all people behind the incident,” he promised.
Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service (MPS) has organized sanitization campaign in Chitipa district to alert the community about the development.
The victim Lucy Kainga in Chitipa district was chopped off her hands by some unknown people.
However, Chitipa police spokesperson Gladwel Simwaka told Maravipost that they are working hand in hand with their Tanzanian counterparts to arrest the culprits.
According to Simwaka, the police suspect that the culprits are hiding in Tanzania.
This is a second incident to happen in the district, following the exhumation of the body of a 71 year old albino man who died in 1974.
Government suspects that the bones of albinos are being taken out to the neighboring countries such Tanzania where the killing and abductions of people with albinism started.
Some Malawians have asking government to introduce death penalty to the perpetrators while the judiciary banned the existence of witchdoctors in the country in order to normalize the situation after suspecting that they are fueling to the malpractice.
