In a bid to maintain public order and safety, the Malawi Police have advised citizens to refrain from using the phrase “Boma ndilomweli sitikusintha,” which translates to “We are not changing the MCP government.”
This caution comes amidst reports of violence, assaults, and injuries linked to the phrase, which is perceived as inflammatory and provocative.
According to sources, the phrase has been used in various contexts, often to express satisfaction with the current government.
However, its usage has also been linked to a surge in violent incidents, with many people reportedly being hacked, assaulted, and injured by angry individuals fed up with the perceived failures of the MCP government.
Peter Kalaya, National police spokesperson is quoted as saying that the advisory is a preventive measure aimed at mitigating further violence and unrest.
While Kalaya could not be reached for confirmation, the police statement emphasizes the need for citizens to exercise restraint and avoid using language that may be perceived as inciteful or inflammatory.
The police have noted that a significant number of cases reported to them involve injuries or assaults linked to the “Boma ndilomweli” narrative.
This has raised concerns about the potential for further violence and instability, particularly if the phrase continues to be used in a manner that provokes or incites others.
In Malawi, the police are mandated to maintain law and order, protect life and property, and prevent crime.
The advisory against using the “Boma ndilomweli” phrase is seen as a measure to prevent further violence and ensure public safety.
The Malawi Police Service Act also empowers the police to take measures to prevent the commission of offenses, including those related to public order and safety.
In this context, the advisory against using inflammatory language is seen as a proactive measure to prevent further unrest and violence.
While some may view the advisory as an infringement on freedom of expression, others argue that it is a necessary measure to maintain public order and safety.
The Malawi government has a responsibility to protect its citizens and ensure their safety, and the police advisory is seen as a step in this direction.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the public will respond to the police advisory.
The need for restraint and responsible language is paramount in maintaining public order and safety.
