Malawi DemonstrationsThe Malawi Police Service is alerting those people planning to disrupt the anti-government demonstrations organized by some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the country to be held next week Tuesday that they will protect all participants according to the law.

The CSOs want the First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s Beatify Malawi (BEAM) trust and Mulhako wa Alhomwe, a culture grouping where President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika belongs, to return the money or services they got from National Aids Commission even though by charter the monies were spent correctly.

The planners of these Demos have faced a lot challenges from various corners in the country, Business people in Blantyre have directly asked them to stop the demonstrations fearing for destruction of property as has happened in the past, with some CSOs in the Southern Region going as far as vowing to disrupt the demonstrations which they view as unjust.

In a statement issued on Friday, National Police Public Relations Officer Rhoda Manjolo said the Police mandated are to provide security in all planned demonstrations as stipulated in Police Act under part 9.

“Malawi Police Service learnt that the Civil Society Organisations (CSO’s) are intending to hold demonstrations in Zomba, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga.

“Government’s position is that it will allow and facilitate for the CSO’s to hold peaceful demonstrations”, said Manjolo.

She said at the moment the Malawi Police is now engaging CSO’s in discussions on how best the demonstrations can be done in order not to infringe people’s rights, endanger people’s lives and property.

“As a result of this the police are assuring Government, CSO’s and all citizens that they are ready and will provide maximum security.

“As at now whilst discussions are still on with the organisers (CSO’s leadership) we are appealing to them to cooperate with Police and provide relevant information pertaining to the demonstrations that will assist in tackling potential security threats that usually go with demonstrations”, said Manjolo

She also urged those people who are intending to take part in these planned demonstrations to be responsible, patriotic to government and Malawi as a nation and ensure that safety is achieved in collaboration with their police so that security is maintained.

On Thursday, organizes of the demonstrations released the program of how the demonstrations will be conducted.
