Malawi President Peter Mutharika to leave for China on Sunday

State House wishes to inform the general public that His Excellency the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will on Sunday, 6th September 2015 depart for China for an official visit.

The President is expected to depart Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe at 16:00 hours in the afternoon. China has been investing a lot in Malawi since Bingu WA Mutharika severed relatins with taiwani.

 

Malawi established diplomatic relations with Beijing on December 28, 2007 after severing ties with Taiwan with which it had relationship for 41 years.

Three months after establishing diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China, Malawi was given a K40 billion (US$286 million) windfall in aid, soft loans, and grants by the Asian giant.

 

Speaking hours after arriving from an official tour of China, Malawi leader, Bingu wa Mutharika, said the package was the first of its kind and the biggest the landlocked poor nation of Malawi has ever received from a single donor.

The packaged included a five-year US$80 million grant which was be used for various priority projects, among them the construction of Malawi’s Parliament Building and construction of the Chitipa-Karonga road in the northern tip of the country. It also included US$175 million of concessionary loans and US$1.7 million for the construction of two rural schools under the China-Africa forum program. Another US$4 million dollars was said to be for defense cooperation.

Despite all the Cash Infusion from the Chinese, Malawi still needs Aid from Western Countries which soured on the Country When Mutharika expelled a british diplomat.
