In order to reduce knowledge gap between developed and non-developed countries Malawi Government in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on Monday held aTISCs workshop on the effective use of technical and scientific information.
Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) is a project that is putting Malawi at a disposal of over 90 million technologies in any field of technologies, like chemistry, mechanical engineering, textile, fixed construction, Transport human necessities and over 40,000 publications.
According to WIPO’s Project officer for Innovation and Technology Support Section Elangi Botoy Ituku the 90 million technologies which includes formulas have been put in patent documents free of charge so that Malawians can reproduce them and adapt them.
“We think that there is no need to spend money and time to find solutions which already exist somewhere in the world, for instance if you want to manufacture medicines one can see what other advanced countries have done and all the formulas are described in the patent documents that we have brought” Ituku said.
Ituku further said that TISCs will be established across Malawi where all stakeholders, Small Medium Enterprises (SME’s), Universities, inventors and university students can go and be given all the information, technical and scientific information publication, articles and thesis.
Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale concurred with Ituku saying the TISC’s will be established in 3 academic institutions in all across the entire region.
Kaphale called upon Malawians and participants to effectively use the technological and scientific information, innovations and development.
Kaphale said “the establishment of TISC in Malawi is timely development that will compliment Government effort in priotising science and technology an important tool for our nation development”
Patent refers to a government title that gives time limited exclusiveness to the owner of patent invention in return for the disclosing of the invention to the patent, the rights are granted to investors and exploitable, in return the country benefits from the inventions.
