Malawi technical colleges in dire need of modern equipment

TEVET official faces Parley

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Technical Entrepreneurial, Vocational, and Education Training (TEVET) has described Malawi technical colleges as failing to meet the digital world as they lack modern equipment.

TEVETA, Executive Director, Elwin Chiwembu Sichiola told the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (PAC) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, that “It’s hard for the technical colleges to produce quality graduates”.

Sichiola added that Malawi still provides old-model training, leading to poor delivery by the trained students.

He said for them to produce a good graduate they need a good teacher and equipment.

“Once the students venture into the industry are failing to deliver as they are still trained with old books as we only get equipment when donors intervene,” said Sichiola.

He further said the government has made a commitment of paying MK3 billion to the current TEVETA financial year which is a plus to their activities.

In his remarks, the Chairperson for the Committee, Mark Bottomani said the committee will lobby for the funds as the government owes TEVETA MK 56 billion.

Bottomani said for TEVETA to buy new equipment, there is a need for funds that the treasury is currently holding.

“It’s high time that TEVETA should also mobilize for their equipment in the absence of government delays to meet up the student’s needs,” said Bottomani.
