Malawi to end Child Marriages by 2030

Malawi Government has committed to ending Child marriages by 2030 in a bid to achieve sustainable population and development.

Minister of Health and Population Honourable Jappie Mhango made 10 commitments when addressed the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25) on Wednesday in Nairobi Kenya.

Mhango made the following 10 Commitments

  1. Increase Health and Population spending to 15% of the national budget.
  2. Halve the unmet need for modern family planning methods to below 11 percent.
  3. Continue to lower pregnancy-related death to 110/100 000 live births.
  4. Ensure 100% of service points deliver youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services.
  5. End child marriages
  6. Increase budget for reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health to 30 percent.
  7. Provide 12 years of free education to every child.
  8. Fully digitalised population data collection.
  9. Include 30% representation of the youth in decision – making bodies.
  10. Ensure all humanitarian responses incorporate SRH services and information.

ICPD25 is being convened by UNFPA and governance of Kenya and Denmark, the summit seeks to mobilise political will and financial commitments for leaders to urgently implement the ICPD25 Programme of Action in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
