Malawi Women’s U20 friendly match loss signals danger

Malawi Women’s U20 National Football team loss to Kangaroo Academy

By Rabson Woodwell

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Soccer expert Thomas Muha says Malawi Women’s U20 National Football team loss to Kangaroo Academy is a sign of danger ahead of their 2021 Olympics qualifiers opener against Zimbabwe coming this weekend.

The team arranged and played a friendly match with Kangaroo Academy on Monday as part of their preparations for the forth coming match in their 2021 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers campaign in which they lost seven nil.

Muha observed that should be a warning to the Malawi Women’s U20 coach Maggie Chombo arguing that the team’s performance proved not be ready for the competition.

He added that losing to an academy seven nil just indicates that there is huge home work to be done.

He said, “let us be honest, this national team is not ready and they are just wasting their time, I do not think they will manage to beat Zimbabwe whose women’s football is a bit more advanced than ours.

“I urge the coach and the whole technical team to work so diligently if they are to get a result against Zimbabwe, otherwise this simply shows how weak our team is. This is why it is better to get a coach who has a better record coaching youth national teams.”

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) appointed Maggie Chombo-Sadiki early this month as Head Coach for the Under 20 Women’s National Football team to lead Malawi during the 2021 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The former national team player is being assisted by Kondwani Mwalweni and Scollastica Khunga.

Wilson Mkandawire is the fitness trainer, Milly Kumwenda and Lina Mtegha are team doctor and team manageress respectively.

But soccer commentator Zacharia; “Corner man” Kasakula condemned the appointment of this coach saying U20 teams need a coach who has a good experience in youth development and should have a good relationship with the young stars.

Kasakula said U20 needs a coach who has been with the Women’s National teams for long time for better transition. Maggie Chombo is a coach who has not been with the youth national teams for some time as a coach.

On the other hand, Maxwell Kachere a soccer analyst, classified Chombo (after her appointment) as a coach who failed on her role as Technical Director of Malawi Women’s national teams, as such; he thinks she cannot lead this team to any success.

Malawi is expected to play Zimbabwe this week-end at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre and a return match on 1 February, 2020 in Bulawayo, in their 2021 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
