Malawi’s anti-corruption CSO challenges Chakwera to fully finance governance bodies

Mzuzu—(MaraviPost)—Alliance Against Corruption (AAC) has challenged President Dr Lazarus Chakwera that as he presents his maiden State of the national address in Parliament on Friday, more funding should be a priority to governance institutions such as Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Fiscal Police, the Judiciary and Malawi Police Service (MPS) if corruption is to be a story of the past.

Speaking to media on Thursday, the Chairperson of the Alliance, Moses Mkandawire, said civil society organisations have a lot of expectations from the current government.

“What we expect on Friday is the commitment in addressing the very same vices that we have been talking about; particularly with regard to how we are going to capacitate institutions of governance that continue helping in curbing corruption in the country.

“The type of commitment that we want to see is how much allocation will actually be given to institutions like ACB, the Office of the Ombudsperson, the Financial Intelligence Unit and also Police, particularly with regard to Malawi Fiscal Police because that institution plays a critical role in curbing corruption,” said Mkandawire.

Echoing similar sentiments, leader of opposition, Kondwani Namkhumwa, said opposition block also expects deliverables from the Tonse Alliance government.

Namkhumwa said: “People voted for the Tonse Alliance government because of the promises they made to the people. Now what we are expecting is that as the President will be addressing us tomorrow, he will tell us what measures and strategies he has put in place so that their campaign promises are fulfilled.”

Alliance Aganst Corruption is a grouping of human rights and legal institutions such as Youth and Society (YAS), Malawi Law Society (MLS) and Church and Society Program of the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia; among others, formed in 2019 with an aim of providing checks and balances on the operations of the government.
