
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Students at Catholic University Of Malawi (CUNIMA) alarmed with the security status of the campus after two students were nearly captured by thugs on the night of Saturday, 7th March, 2020.
According to the written statement issued by the university registrar, Francis Nkhoma the two students went for a walk at around 8:00 p.m going towards the Oblates of Holy Family in the eastern direction of the campus when some men clad in black clothes and armed with pangas coming from the nearby bush started chasing them.
One victims identified as Susan, a second year Social Work student returned to the hostel to report the ordeal to her fellow students who later reported the case to the nearby police station.
“Before we had resolved whether to proceed or return, I saw men wearing black clothes and with panga knives in their hands
threatening to kill us. We ran in different directions and I hid myself in a kitchen at St. Mary’s home, ” reads the statement quoting the Susan.
One of the of the police officers and some security guards together with a multitude of students started searching in all the bushes that surrounded the scene of incident from 9:40 p.m. up to 11:45 p.m when the student was found unhurt but only in a state of shock.
“The thugs failed to capture me. They did not even touch me anywhere. When I heard some students calling my name, I came out through the window of the kitchen and surrendered myself to my fellow students. I did not use the door because I thought the thugs were still around,” she said.
The university therefore lauds the public for the support in searching the missing girl.
“Thanks to everybody who took part in searching for the student during that night. They demonstrated their bravery and spirit if oneness. Thanks to God for protecting the students,” lauds Nkhoma.
The University was established by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi on October 16, 2004.
The college was officially opened its doors in 2006 by the late and former President Professor Bingu wa Mutharika.
