FRANCISTOWN-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi National Football Team is set to take on regional rivals Zambia today in a highly anticipated Four Nations Tournament match in Francistown, Botswana.
The encounter presents a key opportunity for the Flames to test their strength and cohesion as they continue preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Head Coach Kalisto Pasuwa has urged his squad to remain fully focused and avoid underestimating the Zambian side, despite reports that their opponents have fielded a “Team B.”
Pasuwa stressed that such labels can be misleading and warned that any complacency could prove costly.
“There is no small team in football,” Pasuwa said ahead of the match. “Even if they have brought a second-string side, we must approach the game with seriousness and discipline. These matches are important for building a competitive and consistent team.”
The Zimbabwean tactician also highlighted the broader importance of the tournament, noting that it provides valuable game time and an opportunity to assess player combinations, tactics, and overall team chemistry.
Meanwhile, stand-in captain Richard Mbulu expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness and determination to deliver a strong performance.
The forward emphasized the players’ commitment to representing the nation with pride and using the match as a stepping stone for bigger challenges ahead.
“The boys are ready to fight,” Mbulu said. “We understand what is at stake, and these games are helping us prepare for the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. Every match counts, and we are focused on giving our best.”
The Four Nations Tournament offers Malawi a platform to sharpen its competitive edge against regional opponents while building momentum ahead of crucial international fixtures.
Fans will be hoping for a convincing display as the Flames aim to assert their dominance and continue their development under Pasuwa’s leadership.
Kick-off is expected to draw significant attention from supporters across the region, with both teams eager to make a statement in Francistown.
The host Botswana play Zimbabwe in another Semifinal and the winner between Malawi and Zambia, will battle it out into the final against winner between Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Botswana is the second nation to host the four Nations tournament after Malawi hosted it in March, 23-26, 2024 where Kenya who were the guest emerged the inaugural champions. Malawi finished fourth.
