MARAVI POST 2018 REVIEW; Lack of basic human rights a harrowing Malawi reality

1 Min Read

The year 2018 was a terrible year in Malawi in terms of protecting basic human rights of Malawians. This year there was an increase in the barbaric killing of people with albinism, being killed for occult purposes.

Furthermore, there was the death of eight innocent individuals that were suspected of being blood suckers.

In addition to these, there was the inhuman treatment of women in politics.

The events of 2018 highlights how far Malawi is behind in terms of protecting basic human rights of its citizens.

The saddest part of these harrowing events is that reports point to key leaders being in the forefront in hindering the rights of its citizens.

According to Liz Throssell Malawi UN Human Rights spokesperson, “We are concerned about an emerging pattern of threats and violence against women members of parliament and electrical candidates. For example, one female MP’s car was torched in Mangochi in the south of the country in August.”

This assertion reflects the numerous incidents that occurred in the country this year.  We have seen political leaders openly defaming women politicians due to their different views.

Throughout the year numerous demonstrations have been held across the country but without any fruitful outcome.
