LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights group under banner Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has cautioned Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on opposition political parties request to audit electoral system ahead of September 16 General elections.
The grouping has also urged MEC to uphold transparency and accountability on electoral processes
CSEIF Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe told The Maravi Post on Wednesday that while he acknowledges the right of political parties to seek clarity on the electoral process, he cautions against any audit demands that could compromise the integrity and security of MEC systems.
Kondowe added that unrestricted access to passwords and sensitive security features of electronic electoral devices risks undermining MEC’s independence and could expose the electoral system to potential hacking and manipulation.
“Should an audit be permitted, its scope must be carefully defined to ensure it enhances transparency without breaching security protocols or compromising the Commission’s impartiality,” Kondowe said.
Meanwhile, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, Chairperson of MEC said that commission is considering the request by the opposition parties seriously and will issue a formal response in due course.
