The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced a postponement in the declaration and announcement of winners for the parliamentary elections that were scheduled to be announced today, Saturday at 6 pm.

This unexpected delay has been communicated officially through a statement released by MEC’s Public Relations Manager, Sangwani Mwafulirwa.

According to the communique, the announcement of the winners has been deferred, and a new date and time for the release of the election results will be advised by the Commission in due course.

Importantly, the new date for the declaration of results will fall within the legally mandated 14-day period from the original polling day, ensuring compliance with electoral laws.

This development comes as the MEC continues to manage the complexities involved in finalizing and verifying the election results.

The decision to postpone was made to ensure transparency and accuracy in the tabulation process, as MEC seeks to uphold the integrity and credibility of the electoral process in Malawi.

Sangwani Mwafulirwa emphasized that the Commission remains committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election.

He assured the public and all stakeholders that the MEC is working diligently to complete the verification process and will communicate the new timeline promptly once all procedural steps have been concluded.

The parliamentary elections, which were held across the country, are a critical part of Malawi’s democratic process, determining the representatives who will serve in the National Assembly.

The delay in announcing the results may cause some anxiety among the candidates and electorate; however, MEC has reiterated its dedication to accuracy and fairness over speed.

Political analysts suggest that such postponements, while not common, can occur due to logistical challenges, the need to address discrepancies, or to manage legal petitions that may arise during the post-election phase.

MEC’s adherence to the 14-day legal framework for announcement ensures that the electoral process remains within the bounds of Malawi’s electoral laws.

The Commission encourages all political parties, candidates, and the general public to remain calm and patient while the electoral body completes its work.

Further updates will be provided as soon as the Commission finalizes the announcement schedule.

While the delay in announcing parliamentary election winners may be disappointing to many, it underscores MEC’s priority of ensuring the legitimacy and accuracy of the election results.

The Commission remains transparent in its operations and committed to upholding the democratic principles of Malawi.

Citizens are advised to stay tuned to official MEC channels for verified information regarding the new date and time for the declaration of parliamentary election winners.
